HWA, with the support of DACHSER and Terre des hommes, Germany, successfully implemented the project “Promoting Elementary Schooling in Varanasi District” from 2005 to 2010, across three blocks of Varanasi District — Chiraigaon, Cholapur, and Kashi Vidyapeeth.
The second phase, commencing October 2010, consolidated the gains of the previous phase and added an environment component to pave the way for sustainability. Concrete efforts during the second phase moved from “Education to Sustainability” by introducing new elements of rural technical training and village social forestry. The project is implemented by two partners in Uttar Pradesh — PACE and HWA.
Educational Support Centres
Providing supportive coaching to girls of rural areas, the last session of 10 Educational Support Centres was successful. In this academic session, a total of 221 students (66 boys and 155 girls) appeared in the exam and passed with a glorious percentage.
Vocational Training Centres
In the sequence of making girls professional with a pattern of learning and earning, 6 vocational training centres run effectively across the three blocks. Trainees receive training in stitching, glass painting, beauty clinic, painting, and textile, along with value-added learning on their rights and social responsibilities. In the new session of July 2010, a total of 280 new girls enrolled in the remaining 5 vocational training centres for tailoring, cutting, and embroidery.
